Umbraco approach to AI is rooted in the idea that you should be your agent’s owner and you should be able to configure it to your own purposes.

That’s why Umbraco allows you to bring technically any AI agent out there. Umbraco has already made available a long list of providers ready to configure with your own agent like OpenAi, Anthropic, Gemini or OpenRouter amongst others.

You can even use different agents for different areas and purposes in your website.

For this, multiple configuration options are available that allow you to configure each agent for unique purposes, with specific context voice or target audience.

Copilot Workspace

Copilot workspace is a free add-on that provides a section in the backoffice to have AI conversations that involve more than a single page or media item.

The main feature of Workspace are:

  • Persisted Conversations - Durable, searchable chat history stored server-side.
  • Projects - Group conversations under shared instructions and reusable context/resources.
  • Context Panel - See and manage the instructions, contexts, and resources grounding the current conversation.
  • Archived Conversations - Archive conversations instead of deleting them, with a read-only recycle bin.
  • Pin, Rename, Move - Organize conversations, including moving them between projects.

Contextual Copilot

Contextual copilot offers a sidebar that is aware of the content you are currently editing and help you to add or modify content using your preferred agent.

  • Sidebar Chat UI - Conversational interface in the backoffice
  • Content Awareness - Understands current editing context
  • Tool Execution - Frontend tools execute in the browser
  • HITL Approval - Human-in-the-loop confirmation for actions
  • AG-UI Integration - Real-time streaming responses
  • Entity Selector - Target specific content items

Add agent tasks to specific properties. They allow content editors to execute AI-generated values with a single click, such as "Generate an SEO title" or "Summarize this content".

For some time now Umbraco has made available a powerful Developer MCP server that you can use to manage your site, from content to settings and advanced configuration. As the name suggests, this server is really meant to be used by developers or at least by people willing enough to install one of the available MCP clients like VSCode or Cursor.

Fortunately a new Editor MCP server has been released. This server can be configured in compatible host applications such as Claude Desktop, GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT.

Your agent will be able to manage the content of Umbraco without even logging into the backoffice and it will be able to orchestrate between your different content sources, as it might also have access to your Google Docs, Calendar or your Microsoft 365 content and create content directly into your website. How cool is that!

Things you can do with the Editor MCP server:

  • Content management

Create, edit, publish, and organize content pages through conversational commands. Work with block editors, manage drafts, and handle publishing workflows.

  • Media management

Upload, organize, and manage media files. Create folders, move items, and keep your media library tidy.

  • Translation and localization

Create language variants, copy content between languages, and track translation coverage across your site.

  • Content relationships

Understand how your content is connected. Find orphan pages, see what references a page before deleting it, and map outbound links.

  • Content health and reporting

Audit your content for SEO issues, find stale or thin content, identify missing translations, and generate reports on site structure.

How to enjoy the Editor MCP server

To enable the MCP server on your website, it will depend if it’s hosted in Umbraco Cloud or in your own hosting.

The server needs to run in a special ‘worker’. In Umbraco Cloud this is done for you and you just need to enable your website to use the server by installing a free package.

If your Umbraco website is self-hosted it will need some work to be done.

You can find all the details in the official Umbraco documentation.
