Luminary has come in at No.27 in the Top 40 Workplaces to Give Back in Australia list for 2018. Managed by GoodCompany, the list acknowledges organisations that help their people make a difference through donations, fundraising and volunteering.

List nominees are assessed and ranked based on the criteria of: Impact, Innovation and Context (e.g. whether the organisation’s giving programs are part of a broader commitment to corporate responsibility).

“Supporting charities is a really important part of our culture,” says Luminary CEO Marty Drill. “Our offices in both Australia and Bali have partner charities, and we also support other charities that are important to our team on an ad hoc basis.”

For many years, Luminary has partnered with Australian-based charity One Girl, which provides education scholarships to women in Africa who would normally not have access to education. “Our team takes a lot of pride in the fact that we support this charity and many team members have undertaken their own independent fundraising activities to support it,” says Drill.

One of the regular highlights of our activities to support One Girl is our participation in the organisation’s ‘Do It In A Dress’ campaign during the month of October. The philosophy behind this annual campaign is to wear a school dress for those who can’t, and in doing so, help to raise funds so that they can. (To read about some of our team’s initiatives, see our blog post ‘We did it in a dress’.)

In Bali, our partner charity is the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage. The orphanage, on the outskirts of the city of Denpasar, is home to nearly 100 children ranging in age from six months to 19 years. It was established in 2005 in memory of Australian woman and Bali bombing victim Jodie O’Shea.

“Our support for the orphanage allows us to make a difference in a way that brings our Australian and Bali alliances together,” says Drill. “Our main avenue of support comes in the form of donations of food, toys and essential items. We also provide them with our old computers to support the kids’ ongoing education.”

Other charities that we have provided support to in recent years include St Mary’s House of Welcome, through a Christmas food appeal, and the Cancer Council of Australia, through our Biggest Morning Tea bake-off. Luminary also offers team members the opportunity to take one day of volunteer leave a year.
